South Africa launches second health train

first_img16 March 2012 South Africa’s custom-built “health train”, Phelophepha I, delivers health services to remote areas of the country, reaching over 180 000 patients a year. That number will now be doubled, following this week’s launch of the R80-million Phelophepha II. What started out in 1994 as a modest three-carriage ophthalmological clinic, the Phelophepa Health Care Train has grown to hold 18 fully refurbished coaches fitted with special healthcare equipment. The two trains will now operate simultaneously, providing on-board primary healthcare, dental, optometry and psychological care to South Africans living in areas otherwise beyond the reach of such services. Besides the services they offer to their patients, the trains serve as training institutions for final-year nursing, dental, optometry, psychology and pharmaceutical students both from South Africa and abroad. Each train has 20 permanent staff, 16 contracted security officials and 40 students staffing it. As with its predecessor, Phelophepa II will run from January to September of every year.Over 5.5-million people reached Over 5.5-million people have been reached by the project since 1994, and over 20 000 student doctors and nurses have had the opportunity to hone their skills on Phelophepa. Transnet Group chief executive Brian Molefe said Phelophepa II would allow the company to “make an even bigger contribution to society by providing more health care to communities that need these services the most”. Also speaking at the launch, Franz Humer, chairman of the board of directors at Roche, said the company was “proud to have continuously grown our support for the Phelophepa healthcare train during the 18 years of our sponsorship, because Phelophepa has such a remarkable impact on the lives of thousands of people every year”. Why I Don’t Digg Forbes.com

first_imgI’ve seen more and more sites offer a “digg this”button on their article pages.  This includes both the blogosphere andmainstream sites.  We’ve had a  “submit to digg”button on the Small Business Hub site since inception.  We are bigbelievers in social news sites like digg and reddit, and they generate asignificant level of traffic for those of our articles that are well receivedthere. Topics: So, I decided to use my “digg this” bookmarklet(a convenient little javascript bookmark that makes it easy to submit URLs todigg).  I was surprised when instead of giving me the form to fill out thedescription and select a category (the usual behavior), it instead started meat Step 1, asking me to enter the URL.  I thought I had done somethingwrong, so I repeated the process.  Still no luck.  Switched fromFireFox to IE7.  Still no luck.  It kept asking for the URL and titleof the article. If I were running Forbes.com, I’d make it easier forpeople to submit their articles to the social news sites.   If theydon’t want to add a “digg it” button, they could at least notprevent me from using the submission bookmarket.    I think they’remissing an opportunity. After some quick investigation, I finally figured out thatthe original URL to Forbes.com was essentially not “diggable” inthe traditional way, via the bookmarklet.  This was likely due to the adthey splice in when you access that URL for the first time.  Once you skipthrough it, it plants a cookie, and then you’re ok.  So, when thedigg software tried to access the URL, it likely didn’t see any content(and hence forced me to enter the URL and title of the page manually.  Ugh. Sequoiaclaimed they didn’t want to sell YouTube to Google SEOcenter_img So, that’s why I don’t digg Forbes.com.  Haveyou seen any other sites that exhibit this problem? Originally published Jan 27, 2007 11:18:00 PM, updated October 20 2016 But, I can understand why some sites wouldn’tnecessarily want put a “digg this” button on their article pages.  Itdoes clutter up the site a little bit and if you don’t think your contentis likely to get submitted to digg, there’s no sense in wasting space onthe page.  Forbes.com is evidently one of these sites.  So, I wasn’tthat surprised when I discovered that an article I liked on why , didn’t havea “submit to digg” button so I could share it with others..  Noharm done.
